Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries on the planet. Its name means “The Land of the Righteous”. It currently has over 160 various ethnic groups, out of which about 50 % subscribe to Islam, 40 % to traditional African religions and 10 % to Catholic Christianity. The official language is French, but Arabic and local native languages are spoken as well. The prevalent source of income is agriculture, which employs 84 % of workers. Cotton is grown here, and gold and zinc are mined.

The average daily income in Burkina Faso is 1.2. The country is near the bottom of the Human Development Index (161 of 1169 countries). On the Human Poverty Index, it ranks 174th among 177 countries. Almost 45.3 % of the population lives in poverty.
