Rwanda
The Republic of Rwanda is a small landlocked country in Central Africa that was a German (1890) and later a Belgian (1916) colony. Its official languages are English, French and Kinyarwanda. The vast majority of citizens subscribe to Christianity (Catholic or Protestant). There are two ethnic groups in Rwanda, the more numerous Hutu and less numerous Tutsi. The discord between these two ethnic groups, bolstered by Wester influences, culminated in a civil war and the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, during which up to 800,000 people were murdered. The civil war caused the entire economy to collapse. The country relies on imports of large quantities of food and all other goods. Exports consist of coffee and tea. Currently Rwanda has adopted a national programme called “Vision 2020” where finances coming mostly from foreign development aid are invested into public education. However, lack of electricity and poor international internet connectivity are hindering the development of education and the economy. Most inhabitants of Rwanda live in poverty with a daily income of under $1.
